How does the long-term customer relationship work in an art business?

Play the long game. You might sell something small for $50 to someone who’s between jobs, getting divorced, or young and living with parents. They get on your email list. Three, four, or five years later, their life turns around—they’re doing well financially and just bought their first house. Because they’ve had that $50 item in their house for years and you’ve stayed in contact through email and social media, you’re the first person they call when they’re ready to buy art for their new home. You’ll routinely see huge sales of $5,000, $7,000, $10,000, or more from customers who have been in your database for 7, 8, 9, or 10 years. That’s why new customer acquisition at any price point is so important—you’re building relationships that pay off over years, not just making immediate sales.
