How did chat interfaces and chatbots evolve in different parts of the world?

Chat interfaces evolved differently across regions due to unique forcing functions. In China, the logographic nature of Mandarin—which is difficult to type on mobile keyboards—drove massive adoption of chat-based apps, making WeChat the central platform for everything from dinner reservations to bill payments. In Europe, the proliferation of small countries with different cellphone carriers charging exorbitant rates for cross-border calls and texts drove everyone to adopt WhatsApp, which became the communication standard with 2.3 billion daily active users. The United States had no such forcing function until AI and ChatGPT came along, finally making Americans comfortable with chat as an interface for getting things done.
