Why is the story behind my art more important than the quality of the art itself?
Your art alone is not enough, no matter how good it is. Consider these examples: Vincent van Gogh’s widow held a show with his masterpieces (Starry Night, etc.) and nothing sold—until she published his letters explaining the stories behind each painting. Then it all sold. The Mona Lisa was just a ‘respected painting’ until it was stolen in 1911—the story made it world-famous. Banksy set up a stall in New York selling hand-signed originals for $60 each, and almost nobody bought them because they didn’t know the story. A world-class violinist played a $3.5 million Stradivarius in a subway and earned $32 in tips, but sold out a 2,600-seat symphony hall that same night for $100+ tickets. The difference? Context and story. People need to know, like, and trust you. They need to understand who you are, why you create, what inspires you. The artwork is important, but the human connection is what drives sales.
