What percentage of artists and photographers have even a single paid employee?

Out of 1,000 artists and photographers, likely only 10-20 have even a single paid employee, which is between 1-2%. The vast majority operate as one-person businesses. The art industry has always followed a power law where the top 1% (really the top half of 1%) make most of the money. Technology has expanded the number of people creating and selling art—with digital tools, print-on-demand, and online sales—creating more artists selling on more product types than at any time in history. This creates nearly inexhaustible competition. Combined with the fact that most creatives aren’t naturally great at marketing and sales, this means most artists are solo operators trying to handle everything themselves.
