How do I know if an art show or fair was successful? What metrics should I track?

Track multiple metrics beyond just sales revenue. Use a clicker to count foot traffic - a good show will have 200-1,500 people entering your booth over the weekend. Capture email addresses via QR code, aiming for at least 50 new subscribers per show as an indicator of genuine interest. Most importantly, focus on profit rather than sales numbers - you can have high revenue but terrible margins. Calculate your total costs including booth fees ($2,000-$1,500 typical), gas ($900 for distant shows), hotels ($300-$400), and other expenses. Keep detailed records of what sold, at what price, and even notes about the buyers. Also track ‘after show traffic’ - customers who purchase from you months or even years after meeting you at a show, as this indicates the long-term value of that event.
