What has happened to the traditional gallery and art show distribution channels?

The traditional middlemen—galleries and art shows—have been largely disrupted and are losing their stranglehold on art distribution. COVID accelerated this dramatically. All the demand that previously flowed through retail galleries and physical art shows has moved online. This creates an enormous opportunity for individual artists who can now capture that demand directly. Instead of needing distribution through multiple galleries across different states (which was nearly impossible for most artists), you can now reach collectors directly through your own online presence. The gatekeepers are gone, and that market demand is now up for grabs for artists who learn direct-to-consumer marketing.
