Are there different business models that work for different artists, or is there one right path?

There’s no one path that works for everyone. The art business community is incredibly diverse. Some artists sell primarily in galleries. Some own their own galleries, which is actually a trend that works very well. Some are road warriors doing art shows and fairs — anywhere from three to five shows a year up to thirty shows a year. Some sell mostly direct to consumers online. Some only sell originals, some sell originals plus prints and merchandise. Some handle their own printing, some use fulfillment services. There’s a total mixed bag of who uses what, when, where, and for what reason. Any combination is available to you. The key is to understand all your options and resources — whether you’re doing in-person shows, teaching art or photography, leading workshops, or selling online — and figure out what works best for your season of life. As long as it’s legal, every revenue source is worth pursuing. Your job is to figure out the best ways to monetize your creative talent and do it.
