Should my website look creative and showcase my artistic skills in the design?
No—your creative gifting actually gets in the way when building your website. The paradigm for how art is viewed and sold worldwide is in museums and galleries: minimalist, nothing distracting from the work on monochromatic (usually white) walls, proper lighting, and simple information placards. Your website should mimic this. When artists build their own sites, they add fonts, slideshows, sections, color theory, composition tricks—so much ‘goofy nonsense’ that it would be a modern-day miracle if anyone actually saw the art, knew it was for sale, or thought it was a business. Your potential buyers understand what an art gallery is. If they’re in one, they know they’re there to look at and purchase art. Your website should provide that same clear, distraction-free buying experience—not showcase your web design skills.
