Should I study successful living artists instead of just historical masters?

Absolutely. Artists get extensive education about historical masters like Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh, Ansel Adams, but almost no education about the best-selling living artists. Study artists who are actually building successful businesses today. For example, Wyland (the whale artist) does $40-50 million per year and turns each image into about 189 products. Photographer Gray Malin does $10-20 million annually and turns each image into about 220 products. Both have prices ranging from $25 up to six figures. These are the business models you should study if you want to build a sustainable art business, not just the esoteric gallery artists with mysterious ‘contact my agent’ websites.
