Should I offer my work for free to build an audience?

Offering free content can be a good strategy—free samples, free backgrounds, free downloads—to build goodwill and get opt-ins. It’s the ‘jab, jab, jab, right hook’ approach. However, you have to be careful. You can’t just put free stuff out there, get nothing in return, and assume it’s working. You need to measure whether you’re getting the feedback, the opt-ins, the engagement you want. If you’re not getting results, it’s not that the mechanism is broken—it’s that the specific product you’re offering for free isn’t working. You need to try something else. Keep alternating what you offer until you find what resonates. The key is to truncate that feedback loop. Your work must go out into the world, as Picasso said, but it needs to be consumed and you need measurable feedback that tells you whether people actually want it. The free strategy works when it leads somewhere—when it builds a relationship that eventually results in sales. If it’s just free with no path forward, you need to adjust.
