Does photography gear really matter for getting great shots?

While it’s true you need to capture the moment and great photography involves much more than equipment, having quality gear absolutely matters for exceptional work. Yes, you can take decent photos with a smartphone, but if you want superlative results—especially in challenging conditions like low light, astrophotography, Northern Lights, or fast-moving wildlife—professional equipment makes a significant difference. The gear gives you access and possibilities you simply can’t achieve otherwise. High-end cameras and lenses allow you to capture things in difficult environments with the technical quality needed for large prints and professional use. It’s not that gear is everything, but it’s also wrong to say gear doesn’t matter at all. The reality is somewhere in between: skill and vision are essential, and the right equipment enables you to fully realize that vision.
