Why shouldn't I focus on fixing my email open rates or other marketing metrics first?

The problem you think you have is rarely your actual problem. If you’re worried about email open rates but you haven’t properly merchandised your products, don’t have samples of your work in all available formats, or haven’t taken your work to market at all, those marketing metrics are irrelevant. It’s like running a retail store with no products on the shelves and wondering why your advertising isn’t working. Your real problem is almost always psychological—how you’re thinking about your business, what you’re prioritizing, and why. Fix the foundational issues first: have finished products, display them properly, and get them in front of buyers.
