How long will I realistically be pursuing my art business?

Artists and photographers are fundamentally different from other professionals in that the desire to create and have work seen never leaves them. Many artists continue creating and selling well into their 80s, 90s, and even past 100 years old. This means most artists have 20 to 70 years left to build their business. Understanding this long time horizon is crucial—it means you should focus on getting the fundamentals right rather than seeking overnight success. When you recognize you’ll be doing this for decades, the short-term effort and learning required becomes far more worthwhile. This perspective helps you avoid the trap of expecting immediate results and instead commit to building a sustainable business year after year.
