What fundamental principle should I understand about marketing my art?

Marketing fundamentally comes down to two things: getting attention and then asking for something. Without attention, nobody sees your art or message, which means they never get to know you, follow you, build a relationship with you, or become emotionally bonded to your work—and they certainly won’t purchase it. After mastering your craft and ensuring your work is something the market wants, the next critical step is capturing attention. Every successful artist has figured out how to capture attention and continues to do so. But getting attention isn’t enough—you must ask for something, whether that’s an email address, a follow, or a sale. If you don’t ask, you’ll end up with nothing.
