What is 'passive income' in the art business, and how do I create it?
Passive income in the art business is mostly nonsense. You cannot just set up prints or a website and expect money to roll in without effort. You have to market yourself the entire time, and it doesn’t stop—ever. What matters is the math: How many new customers did you acquire this year? That’s the number you need to focus on growing. It’s not passive—it’s about building a mathematical machine. Acquire customers at any price point, market to them consistently, and a percentage will return to purchase again. Some of those will become collectors who buy from you repeatedly over their lifetime. That’s the business model, and it requires active, consistent marketing indefinitely. There’s no shortcut or passive version.
