How do I use price anchoring at art shows and on my website?

Price anchoring works because human beings are wired to make purchasing decisions based on comparison. We subconsciously anchor to something expensive, which makes lower-priced items feel more reasonable. Think of a car dealership: the supercharged $250,000 car sits in the center, and all the regular cars (that people actually buy) surround it. We anchor on that expensive car, then feel better about buying the $45,000 one because ‘at least it’s not $250,000.’ Apply this to your booth or website: display a very large, expensive statement piece—maybe a 60x40 metal print priced at $15,000 or even higher. This serves two purposes: it anchors visitors’ price perception so your $500-$2,000 pieces feel very reasonable, and occasionally someone wealthy will simply buy the expensive piece outright. Don’t be afraid to price high on your anchor piece. It makes everything else in your range more accessible.
