Why is understanding the creator economy and social media platforms so important historically?
Social media represents the biggest opportunity artists have had in history, and it’s important to understand this in context. Historically, TV networks (Fox, CNN, ABC, NBC) and magazines controlled all the distribution and eyeballs, and you had to buy expensive ads to reach people — completely cost prohibitive for individual artists. This is why the “starving artist” problem existed for so long. Now, social media platforms are the new Main Street of the Internet with billions of people spending time there every single day. As an individual creator, you can tap into this massive audience without paying for expensive ads. The platforms are now actively promoting creators and original content because they’ve realized creators are their lifeblood. This has completely democratized the ability to build an art business — everyone can do it regardless of budget, which is unprecedented in history.
