Why do I need my own website instead of just selling on marketplaces?

You need a homebase — a URL that you own and control, where you have the deed in your hand. You’re not renting. Marketplaces are fine for validation and additional sales channels, but you need something no one can take away from you on the internet. This is fundamentally different from relying solely on third-party marketplaces where you don’t own the customer relationship or the platform. Your own website gives you complete control over your brand, your email list, and your business.
