I create many different forms of art—painting, customized clothing, shoes, music, books. How do I structure my business when I do so many different things?
Nothing changes at all. You’re the brand. There’s this prevailing wisdom that to be successful you need to nail down a niche, but I’ve found there are more successful artists without a defined niche than with one. It doesn’t matter if you do painting on canvas, customized t-shirts and pants and shoes, write books, create music—you are the brand. What matters is: who are you? Where are you from? What makes you interesting? Your name is the brand. I have a saying: I’ve never met a revenue source for creatives that I don’t like as long as it’s legal. You never know what’s going to sell. Some creatives teach photography classes in national parks, some teach kids to paint, some sell photo books, novels, CDs. If it’s art-adjacent and you create it, you can sell all of it under your personal brand. Don’t worry about having too many offerings—you’re the common thread that ties it all together.
