Your email list is the only asset you truly own. Social media followers can disappear if platforms change or go away, but email addresses and phone numbers go with you from platform to platform. You can email your list directly for minimal cost and upload your list to advertising platforms to show targeted ads. When evaluating an art business, look at the email list size and its growth over the last 12 months—this tells you exactly how much marketing someone is doing, how effective they are, and how much better their business is getting. If your list isn’t growing, your business is stagnant. Your marketing either isn’t working or you’re not doing enough of it. The email list is the number one gauge of art business health and success. Everything you do—live shows, in-person events, giveaways—should be measured by how many emails you captured.
