How should photographers use limited editions in their pricing?
As a photographer, you absolutely need to use limited editions—they’re very important. Here’s an easy approach: Start with your open edition prints at various sizes and substrates. Then pick a size you like and a substrate you like (maybe metal or acrylic) and create limited editions at that level. Try different edition sizes—maybe one of 4, one of 16. Try some that are hand-signed and some that aren’t. The key is creating a range of pricing. A typical structure: merchandise and tiny prints under $100, then various media types (fine art paper, canvas, metal, acrylic, maybe wood) from $100-$1,000, then limited editions starting at $1,000 and going up in tiers ($1,500, $2,500, $4,500, $5,500), and finally uber-premium large limited editions in the $7,000-$10,000 range. When you have this range, everything gets easier—you don’t get ground down or negotiated as hard, and people understand why things cost what they cost.
