What are the core basics every artist needs to get right in their business?

First, have a website you own—your own domain, email capture, and control over its appearance. The site should mimic a gallery: minimalist, with art on the wall and clear pricing. Second, visitors need to learn something about you as a person, not just your credentials or show history. Third, run sales and marketing campaigns consistently. You’re not a hobbyist—you have a business, and every business must market. These basics compound over time. Artists often avoid this foundational work by chasing shiny objects: trying a marketplace, then a gallery, then a show, then another platform—all while avoiding the hard work of treating it like a business and actually marketing.
