Why is selling direct so important for building a sustainable art business?

Selling direct isn’t primarily about avoiding gallery commissions—it’s about maintaining your customer information. When you sell direct, you capture and own the relationship with every buyer. This allows you to turn one-time buyers into lifelong collectors and market to them in perpetuity. You’re building a database of people you can reach out to with every new release, sale, or show. Without selling direct, you’re essentially working as a commission-only salesperson with no base salary. With a strong collector list built from direct sales, you have a guaranteed base income before you even start working each year—some collectors will buy 20-60% of new work automatically. This is the fundamental business model that creates sustainable, long-term income in the art business.
