What is the secret to having a successful art business from a pricing perspective?
The secret is having a complete range of pricing. You need prices from 0-100 (merchandise and small prints), 100-1,000 (larger prints in various media types like fine art paper, canvas, metal, acrylic), 1,000+ (limited editions), and above that your originals. Human beings make purchasing decisions based on comparison. When someone sees your entire pricing ladder, they understand why an original costs $2,000—they can see the progression. This prevents the insulting lowball offers. More importantly, this range lets you acquire far more customers. Not everyone is ready to spend $1,000 on original art, but they might spend $20 on greeting cards. Once they buy something small, they become a customer, you have their email, and the math shows they’re significantly more likely to return and purchase again—possibly that $2,000 original later. A healthy art business sells 50-80+ pieces per year, not just 3-6 originals. At year’s end, you have 80 customers you can bring back for more sales.
