Should I sell merchandise with my artwork on it, or does that diminish my credibility as a fine artist?
Every major art museum has a gift shop—that should tell you something. Merchandise serves multiple strategic purposes beyond direct revenue. When someone buys a coffee mug, yoga mat, or tote bag with your art, your work enters their daily life. Every time they use it, they’re reminded you exist. When they’re eventually ready to buy wall art—because they bought a new house, redecorated, or downsized—you’re top of mind. Merchandise also provides impulse purchase options for people who like you and want to support your creativity but aren’t ready to measure walls or discuss purchases with their spouse. It’s a customer acquisition tool that keeps working for you offline, where traditional marketing can’t reach people.
