What's the difference between being a hobbyist and running an art business?

A hobbyist is unconstrained — you can make whatever you want, create for whatever reason, and answer to nobody. There’s no shame in being a hobbyist; it’s a perfectly valid choice. However, a business has one purpose: to create a customer. If you want to run a business, the customer gets a vote. You don’t get the final say — the market does. If you don’t create customers, you don’t have a business; you have a hobby with overhead. The distinction is important because the rules that apply to hobbyists don’t necessarily apply to business owners, and vice versa.
