Do I need to offer merchandise for every artwork I sell?

No, you don’t need to offer merchandise for every piece. You can be selective about which artworks you make available as merch. If you have limited editions or special pieces that feel too personal or important to put on mugs or t-shirts, you don’t have to. However, understand that even the world’s most famous artworks appear on merchandise—it’s essentially placing an advertisement for your work on someone’s back, desk, shoulder, or phone. When someone uses a phone with your art on the case, friends see it and ask where they got it, starting conversations. That’s the main purpose of merchandise: visibility and conversation-starting. As long as you have items at lower price points to serve collectors with smaller budgets (like college students who love art but are broke), you’re covering that audience. Merchandise doesn’t have to include your most precious pieces if you’re not comfortable with that.
