Why don't more artists and photographers know that they need to build a direct business model?
It’s common knowledge in every other industry—any entrepreneur or Shark Tank investor will tell you to go direct—but the art world is an outlier. For decades, the ecosystem of galleries, publishers, and online marketplaces conditioned artists to think that uploading to third-party sites and chasing gallery representation is ‘how it’s done.’ No one conspired to mislead artists; it’s just that the industry norms led people to follow the herd off a cliff. Most artists simply never learned basic business principles, and nobody told them the truth until now.
