Why isn't my art selling based on quality alone?
Art has never been enough on its own, throughout all of history. Consider these examples: Banksy set up a stall in New York City selling original signed pieces worth $20,000 each for $60. He didn’t make his first sale until 3:30 PM and only sold $420 worth all day. A world-champion violinist who sold out a 2,200-seat symphony hall at $100/ticket the night before ($275,000 total) played the same $3.5 million Stradivarius in a DC subway station for three hours and made only $35 in tips—almost no one stopped. The Mona Lisa was just an average portrait until it was stolen, creating a story that made it famous. Without context, without a story, without people knowing about the artist, even the best art doesn’t sell. Human beings need to connect with who you are as a person, not just the art itself.
