If I'm a new artist just starting out, should I pursue both direct and indirect sales, or focus only on direct?

Focus 90 to 100 percent of your time, energy, and money on building direct sales channels that you own. If a gallery or third party approaches you or an opportunity falls in your lap, fine—treat that as gravy, maybe 5 to 10 percent of your revenue. But do not actively chase galleries or spend effort on channels you don’t control. History shows that indirect revenue will disappear eventually, so investing heavily in it is a waste of your limited resources. Build your foundation on what you own.
