How long does it realistically take to recoup my investment and start making money from my art business?
There’s no magical formula, and anyone who gives you one is lying—run the other direction. It really depends on where you’re starting from. Some people are more established, some are starting from scratch. Some sell their first piece in three months, others take several years. If you’ve already made some sales, that’s the market telling you that you have a product people want—you just have the marketing problem. Generally, you should give yourself the flexibility of a couple of years to build a serious business. Where people fail is thinking ‘I’ll try this for a few months’ or ‘I’ll see where I’m at in one year.’ That’s what artists have done their entire careers—trying new shiny objects, finding them difficult at first, then giving up and trying something else. If I had to guess an average, it’s probably somewhere between two and four years, sometimes longer. But if you’re willing to put in the work and be consistent with what you learn, just about every artist will succeed. The question is: are you willing to do the real work?
