What is the most important profundity artists need to understand about their creative career?
You will be creating art for the rest of your life—literally until you physically can’t anymore. Artists in their 80s, 90s, and over 100 still want their art seen and sold. This means you have 20, 30, 40, 50, or even 60-70 years left to get this right. Too many artists make stupid decisions through a lens of time that’s way too short—trying something for a month or six months and quitting if it doesn’t work. Every older artist wishes they had started consistent marketing 30 years earlier. Understand this time horizon: you’re not building a business for one year or five years, you’re building it for the rest of your life. This perspective should fundamentally change how you approach marketing and business decisions—with patience, consistency, and a long-term view.
