How important is storytelling when selling art at shows and in general?
Storytelling is absolutely critical and can be the difference between making a sale or not. One artist increased sales dramatically by simply writing out short story cards (just three sentences) for each major piece, explaining themes like resilience, introspection, or gratitude. These handwritten cards led directly to emotional connections and sales - including one $2,000 sale that would not have happened otherwise. The story doesn’t have to reveal every detail of your original intent; instead, make it relatable to your audience by picking up on who they are (parent, professional, etc.) and framing the narrative in a way that resonates with their life experience. Many buyers make emotional purchases and may even cry when connecting with a piece through story. Remember: story is how you stand out in a crowded market where even the best art gets overlooked without context.
