Why do so many artists fail to make a living in the gallery model?

The gallery model is deeply flawed for all but the top 1% of artists. Research interviewing about 25,000 artists in galleries in New York and London found that less than 1%—really a fraction of a percent—make enough money in galleries to support their family and have it be their full-time job. Everyone else in galleries still has a part-time job or a supportive spouse. The ratio of artists making it in the gallery model is similar to the ratio of people who play a sport versus professional athletes—it’s a power law distribution. While galleries can be a revenue source (and any legal revenue source is good), relying on them as your primary business model is not sustainable for the vast majority of artists.
