Why do so many artists struggle to make a living from their art despite being talented?
The vast majority of mistakes that keep people in the hobby zone rather than the business zone come from not understanding the long-term perspective. Artists and photographers will create until they physically cannot—well into their 80s, 90s, even 100s. You have decades to get this right, yet most people don’t focus on the basics needed to actually build a business: a professional website where art can be purchased, email collection and marketing, consistent presence, and proper pricing range. Instead, they chase get-rich-quick schemes, trendy tactics, or simply hide behind their work without doing the marketing. The fundamental issue is not taking the business side seriously early enough, then reaching very old age wishing they’d started 30 or 40 years earlier.
