What are the typical financial terms in art licensing agreements?

Traditional art licensing typically pays artists around 6-8% of wholesale prices. Often you also have to split that percentage 50-50 with a licensing agent, so you end up receiving about 50% of 6% of the wholesale price. This means you’re earning pennies on the dollar and need to sell very high volumes to make significant income. The artist gets paid last in this model, and it requires moving massive quantities of product to generate substantial revenue.
