What is the difference between owned and rented attention?
Rented attention is anything that can be taken away from you at any time—primarily your followers on social media platforms. The platform controls that relationship, not you. Owned attention is what you control directly: email addresses, phone numbers (for texting), and physical mailing addresses. These can’t be taken away by a third party. To some extent, website traffic is owned, but even that can be affected by external factors. The key is to focus on building owned attention—especially your email list—because that’s where you have control and direct access to your audience. This owned attention is what gives you the foundation for successful marketing and sales.
