Why is it so important to build my own collector database instead of relying on galleries?

An art business is fundamentally a collector-driven business. A collector is someone who purchases 7+ pieces from you over a lifetime. When you sell only through galleries, you have no idea who’s buying your work — the gallery owns that relationship. That’s a major problem because you won’t be in that gallery forever, statistically speaking. If collectors keep going back to the gallery instead of you directly, you’re building the gallery’s business, not yours. You need a home base where you know who’s purchasing, can contact them, and can market to them over time. Collectors are the lifeblood of a sustainable art business, and you can only nurture those relationships if you actually know who they are.
