What are the realistic paths to making a living as an artist?
There are really only three ways. First is the gallery model, which everyone wants but only works for less than 1% of artists—it’s deeply flawed for everyone else. Second is the marketplace route (uploading to major art marketplaces), but with so many artists on those platforms, it’s extremely hard to be discovered, and less than one-tenth of 1% do sustainably well there. Third, you can either become a road warrior doing 10 to 30 in-person shows per year (paying booth fees, setting up, being on your feet all weekend), which is totally viable but hard work, or you market yourself directly by building your own online presence—growing a social following, building an email list, making direct sales, getting discovered by interior designers, and eventually galleries. The most successful artists combine direct marketing with other revenue streams, but you have to get yourself out there and do the marketing work yourself.
