What's the difference between a direct business model and an indirect business model for artists?
A direct business model means you own and control your sales channels and customer relationships—selling through your own website, your own email list, your own gallery space, etc. An indirect model means you rely on third parties (galleries, online marketplaces, distributors, art shows) who own the customers and set the rules. In a direct model, you build equity and can count on consistent income; in an indirect model, the rug can be pulled out at any time and you’re left with nothing.
