What are the most important metrics for growing an art business?

The number one most important metric is the number of new customers acquired per year. This is the most predictive metric of future revenue potential. Here’s why: if you have a good year and sell to only 6-7 people, then at year-end when you want to promote a new body of work or run a holiday campaign, you only have 6-7 people to email. Your results will be limited. But if you have 200 people who’ve already purchased, you have much better odds of success. There are only three ways to grow an art business: (1) acquire new customers, (2) get existing customers to purchase again, and (3) increase average order value. It’s significantly easier to get someone to purchase a second time than to get their first purchase. Art and photography is a collector-driven business—some buyers will purchase 7+ pieces over a lifetime. Focus on customer acquisition as your primary growth metric.
