What are the viable paths to making it as an artist if galleries don't work for most people?

The gallery model follows a power law—only the top 0.1% make real money, and even then, galleries today want you to already have a website, large social media following, and big email list. You’re essentially left with two viable paths: First, hit the in-person show and fair circuit hard—doing 10-20 shows per year, getting a booth, capturing emails, and building a business that way. Second, sell direct by opening your own online art gallery. Both paths work, but you have to commit and keep at it. You must keep your gallery doors open and keep marketing consistently. There’s no viable path forward without taking this seriously, but the good news is you have your entire lifetime to get it right.
