What should I realistically expect my art business to look like in the short term versus long term?

The biggest mistake artists make is asking ‘what will my business look like in 3, 6, or 9 months?’ when they should be asking ‘what will it look like in 5 years?’ Creative people are wired differently—you’ll be doing this for the rest of your life, whether that’s 20, 30, 40, 50, or even 60+ years. People in their 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and even over 100 still want to know how to sell their art and get more eyeballs on it. Understanding you have this long time horizon changes everything. Think of it like the wine business—some years will be great vintages, others will be harder due to life circumstances, health issues, or burnout. But every year the grapes regrow and you get another chance. Stop throwing away years by not doing the basics, and start building with the perspective that you have decades ahead of you.
