Why do artists stay as hobbyists instead of building real art businesses?

Artists fail to build real businesses because they don’t understand or apply the fundamental paradigm: everything you do online must mimic how art is viewed and sold in the real, offline world. In the real world, artists are great at creating work, talking about it, being personable, and selling. But the minute ‘online’ enters the equation, everything goes out the window. They post only art (the ‘art gatling gun’), their websites are cluttered and don’t resemble galleries, and they go dark on marketing for months at a time (closing the gallery doors). They also work with time horizons that are way too short—trying things for a few months and quitting when they don’t see results, instead of understanding they have decades to build this. Without fixing these fundamental problems—consistent marketing, proper presentation, and sharing their story—the business never gets momentum, year after year.
