How does print-on-demand fulfillment work economically for the artist?

With print-on-demand, you see the wholesale prices from the printers (often better rates than individual artists get because of volume). You set your retail prices based on markup over wholesale. When an order comes in, you receive the wholesale price minus credit card processing fees (around 1-1.1%, not 3%) and minus any subscription transaction fees if applicable—this goes directly into your account. The remaining money goes directly to the printer, who prints the work, packages it (often with your logo on the box), and ships it. You never touch inventory, never pay upfront, and never handle fulfillment. The artist takes zero financial risk per order.
