How do I know what subject matter to focus on as an artist?

Choose subject matter that genuinely excites you—something that will get you up at six in the morning eager to work and have you so absorbed that you lose track of time. You have to love what you’re painting. Consider what comes naturally to you and what you’re personally drawn to, whether that’s landscapes, coastal scenes, or anything else. Your enthusiasm for the subject will come through in the work and sustain you through the long hours.
