Even if I'm successful and making good money from my art, what should I watch out for?
The biggest danger for successful artists is complacency. When you reach a good level of income and measure yourself against your peers, you can feel like you’re doing awesome and get comfortable. Working in the business starts taking up more time—orders, customer service, accounting—and you stop being as aggressive with your marketing. Even successful artists typically have significant holes in their marketing: they’re not running consistent ads, their email isn’t sophisticated, they’re not maximizing lead capture opportunities. The key is to maintain best practices, stay hungry, don’t get complacent, and make sure you have the bandwidth to do all aspects of marketing well. Just because you reached success doesn’t mean you can stop focusing on marketing.
