Why doesn't art sell based purely on its quality? I create excellent work but it's not selling.
Art is not a meritocracy based solely on quality. History is full of examples proving this. Banksy once set up a booth in New York selling original signed pieces that would normally fetch $20,000-$75,000 each. He sat there all day and didn’t make his first sale until 3:45 PM. Total sales for the day: $430. One buyer negotiated him down to $30 per piece and had no idea what she’d bought. If Banksy originals can go unnoticed and unsold without context and story, any art can. Van Gogh, the Mona Lisa, and countless others had similar trajectories—the art went nowhere until there was a story attached. It doesn’t matter how good your art is. You must give people the story: Who are you? What circumstances led you to become an artist? Why do you create what you create? The story creates the context that makes people care. Without it, people just walk by, no matter how exceptional the work.
