How important is it for artists to understand they'll be creating and selling art for the rest of their lives, and why does that matter for business decisions?

It’s profoundly important. Artists will be creating and seeking appreciation and sales for the rest of their lives—often into their 80s, 90s, and beyond. This is fundamentally different from other careers where people retire. Because of this, artists make short-sighted decisions based on timetables that don’t exist—trying something for a few weeks or months and giving up. The crucial insight is: when you have 20, 30, 40+ years left in this business, it makes absolute sense to do the hard thing NOW—learning to market yourself—instead of kicking that can down the road. It only gets harder as you age. Don’t wait to start learning how to market yourself. Start now, even though it’s difficult, because you have decades ahead where this skill will pay dividends.
