Should I be afraid of niching down too narrowly with my art subject matter?
Many artists fear that focusing on a specific niche will turn people off or limit their market. However, embracing your niche can actually be powerful for building a dedicated audience and making sales. One artist was initially afraid to focus on Grateful Dead-inspired work, but when she leaned into that community fully—particularly on social media groups dedicated to that fanbase—they wrapped their arms around her, supported her work, led to in-person connections and vending opportunities, and generated consistent sales. Rather than limiting you, a clear niche helps you find and connect with your true collectors. You can always expand later, but having a focused identity helps you build momentum and a loyal following.
